1. Watch! Watch Spongebob procrastinate his essay writing by focusing on illuminating the first letter of his paper. An Illuminated letter is highly decorative, and illustrative proceeding the first word of the page.
2. Practice. In your sketchbook, practice illuminating the first letter of your name. Think of illustrations that can be included, a floral or geometric border, and an old English (or highly decorative) font for your type. Look below for some examples.
3. Create. We will be making our monogram (the first letter of our name) in the illuminated manuscript style. We will also be delving it an etching technique that will further push the antiquated look of our pieces.

Notice the Illuminated letters that start the text. Notice there size (compared to the other letters), ornate designs, border, texture, color. Think about how you would illuminate the first letter of your name. Would you include a floral pattern, specific animal, family seal?
